Significance of the day of action
Mayor Hanno Benz emphasizes the relevance of the topic and refers to the historical development of democratic rights as well as current challenges.
The “Day of the History of Democracy” is being celebrated nationwide for the first time and commemorates in particular March 18 as a key date in the development of German democracy – from the Mainz Republic of 1793 through the March Revolution of 1848 to the first free People's Chamber election of the GDR in 1990.
Darmstadt with its own history of democracy
Darmstadt also looks back on a significant democratic tradition. Personalities such as Georg Gottfried Gervinus, Georg Büchner, and Heinrich von Gagern exemplify the commitment shown in different eras.
The city sees the day of action as an opportunity to highlight historical developments and strengthen social cohesion.
