Holiday program, special guided tours and grandparents' day at the HLMD
Darmstadt. The Hessian State Museum Darmstadt (HLMD) offers a diverse program for all age groups in August 2025. From summer holiday activities for children and exciting special tours for adults to the popular Grandparents' Day , there is plenty on offer for those interested in culture.
Grandparents' Day at the Museum
On Saturday, August 30, the HLMD invites grandparents with grandchildren between the ages of 4 and 12 to a special museum day. These groups will receive a reduced admission price of €5 per person . The event offers an opportunity to make cultural discoveries together.
Creative holiday workshop for children: Drypoint etching
As part of the summer holiday program, a drypoint etching workshop Thursday, August 7th , from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm . Under the guidance of Sophie Ruf, MA , children will learn the creative process of this printing technique step by step – from choosing a motif and working with the drypoint needle and zinc plate to creating their own print.
Cost: €15 per person, €12 reduced rate, €13.50 with the Hessen Family App.

Guided tours of the special exhibition “Candida Höfer. Photographs”

- Sunday, August 24 , 11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.: Guided tour with Dr. Stephanie Hauschild
- Sunday, August 24 , 4:00–5:00 p.m.: Guided tour with Barbara Rubert, MA
Participation: €4 guided tour fee plus admission, max. 20 people.

Tandem tour: Zoo architecture in transition
On Wednesday, August 20 , from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Frederik Linti (Zoo Vivarium) and Dr. Stephanie Hauschild will lead a tour of the exhibition, focusing on the evolution of architectural concepts in zoos.
Cost: €4 tour fee plus admission; maximum 20 participants.
Messel Year 2025: Fossil tour on August 27th
To mark the 30th anniversary of the Messel Pit's , a guided tour of the fossil collection
will take place on Wednesday, August 27 , from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. geologist Marco Kollbacher Cost: €4 tour fee plus admission; maximum 25 participants.
