Retention areas relieve the burden on Reinheim and Ueberau
In recent days, the Seewiesen meadows have again absorbed significant amounts of water. As the city of Reinheim reports, several paths had to be temporarily closed as a result. The administration is now providing information about the current flood situation and the measures taken.
Retention space with important protective function
The impoundment of water in the lake meadows is technically planned and expressly desired from a water management perspective. The areas serve as a retention basin and specifically contribute to protecting built-up areas in Reinheim and the Ueberau district from flooding.
Decades ago, the district road between Reinheim and Ueberau was structurally modified to allow for controlled flooding when necessary. An existing retention basin also remains deliberately empty to provide additional capacity for water volumes in the event of potential flooding within the towns.
Digital measuring points improve flood management
The current situation has been continuously monitored and assessed by parts of the city's administrative staff for almost two weeks. In addition to surface runoff, it is primarily the high pressure of groundwater that has led to the extensive flooding of the lake meadows.
To further professionalize flood management, digital flood monitoring stations were installed about a year ago. These enable continuous water level monitoring, largely eliminating the need for nighttime patrols. At the same time, the public is provided with transparent information.
Current water levels can be found online at:
www.reinheim.de
The measuring stations are connected to an automated warning system. When defined threshold values are reached, administrative staff and fire department commanders are informed via SMS; supplementary situation information is sent via email.
Water levels are currently declining
According to the city, water levels are currently receding. The situation continues to be monitored and assessed. The city of Reinheim is organizationally and technically prepared to react to changes both according to plan and flexibly.
