South Korean national player arrives at Böllenfalltor from the Pohang Steelers
SV Darmstadt 98 have filled their vacant striker position. South Korean international Hojae Lee joins the Lilies from first-division side Pohang Steelers and will wear the number 9 jersey at the Böllenfalltor stadium .
Sporting director Paul Fernie described the 25-year-old as a long-sought target. Lee possesses great physicality, heading ability, and finishing skills, and can operate as a classic target man in the penalty area.
Successful goalscorer in South Korea
Lee was born in Suwon, , and spent part of his youth in New Zealandbefore joining the youth academy of Incheon United. His path led him to Korea University and then to the Pohang Steelers in 2021.
The center forward made 177 appearances for the South Korean first division club , scoring 53 goals . Last season he scored 15 goals in 34 league games , and this season he already has eight goals in 20 matches .
Lee made his debut for the South Korean national team in July 2025 and has played three international matches so far.
"I'm looking forward to German football."
Lee explained that the opportunity to continue his career in Germany immediately thrilled him. He is looking forward to playing for a club steeped in tradition and repaying the club's faith with goals.
With the signing of the 25-year-old, the Lilies close one of the most important open gaps in the squad before the new season.
