The party points to aid programs for homeless people during the winter months.
As the Darmstadt Green Party reports, winter poses major challenges for homeless people. Cold, wet weather, and a lack of shelter exacerbate their already difficult living situation. The party therefore calls for special attention and solidarity and points to existing support services in the city.
Extensive support network
“No one has to sleep on the streets in Darmstadt,” said Nicole Frölich, the Green Party’s spokesperson on social policy. The city has a comprehensive support network with counseling centers, shelters, and outreach programs.
The “Z 14” on Zweifalltorweg offers 24/7 protection for homeless men. Women can find support at “LIV – FrauenWohnen” (Women’s Housing) on Benzweg. Single mothers can use the ten family rooms at “MuKiS” ( and Child Support).
Another key contact point is the tea room on Alicenstrasse. There, a lounge, shower and washing facilities, a street clinic, and social work advice are available – for example, regarding housing searches or dealing with authorities.
Support without coercion
Not everyone accepts these offers. Some prefer their own private space in public areas or spend the night with trusted individuals. The Greens emphasize that this must be respected. Street workers are therefore out in the city every day, actively seeking contact and distributing items such as sleeping bags or warm clothing.
New project “FlexHi” closes supply gap
"FlexHi" is a supplementary service aimed at homeless people with mental health challenges – a group often overlooked by traditional services. The project is a collaboration between the City of Darmstadt, the Darmstadt-Dieburg Regional Diaconal Service, and the Hessian State Welfare Association.
“FlexHi combines medical and social work services and offers support from a single source,” explained Heiko Depner, spokesperson for the Green Party in Darmstadt. Projects like this are crucial for stabilizing those affected and enabling them to find ways out of social exclusion.
Social policy responsibility in focus
Depner continued, saying that homelessness has many causes, often triggered by personal crises or biographical disruptions. The Green Party's goal is to provide early support, create opportunities, and continuously improve existing services.
Winter is a time when solidarity becomes particularly visible. "Homeless people are part of our city's society. They deserve respect, support, and the chance for a dignified life," Depner concluded.
