Carlo-Mierendorff-School and Friedrich-Ebert-School are focusing on supporting greater educational equity
Griesheim. To ensure the continued availability of the established homework support programs at the Carlo-Mierendorff School and the Friedrich-Ebert School, the city, schools, and parent-teacher associations are jointly appealing for donations. The program is specifically aimed at elementary school children with increased language or social support needs who are unable to access institutional support services.
After the Darmstadt-Dieburg district discontinued its funding, a temporary solution was initiated at the local level. Financing for the first semester of the 2025/2026 school year was secured through a successful grant application submitted by the school support associations to the district's social foundation – with €4,000 per school. Further support came from foundations such as the "Slate Tablet Foundation.".
This free program has been an integral part of daily life at both primary schools for years. Through close collaboration between the schools, parent-teacher associations, and the youth services department of the city of Griesheim, an accessible learning format was developed that offers targeted support to children in small groups with consistent caregivers.
City calls for shared responsibility
“This commitment to educational equity and participation deserves our full support,” emphasizes Mayor Geza Krebs-Wetzl, who has assumed patronage of the project. “I sincerely thank everyone involved and call upon the citizens of Griesheim to take joint responsibility so that we can maintain this program beyond the current school semester.”
The city of Griesheim, through its youth services department, acts as the sponsoring organization for the program and provides the teaching staff. The supporting associations handle the financial administration, issue donation receipts, and ensure that the funds are used for their intended purpose – specifically, to pay the freelance instructors.
