Award for over 50 years of commitment to the natural bathing lake Großer Woog
For his many years of voluntary service with the Woogsfreunde, Dr. Reinhard Cuny was awarded the Certificate of Honor of the State of Hesse by Mayor Hanno Benz on March 11, 2025.
“For over 50 years, Reinhard Cuny has been dedicated to Darmstadt’s large bathing lake in the east of our city. It is thanks to his commitment that the Woog has been preserved as a natural bathing lake. It is a great pleasure for me to present him with this well-deserved award today,” Benz explained at the ceremony.
A life dedicated to preserving the Woog
Dr. Reinhard Cuny, born in 1951, was a co-initiator of the citizens' initiative for the preservation and maintenance of the Woog as a natural bathing lake , which he co-founded in 1973. This later became the now non-profit association "Woogsfreunde – Bürgerinitiative zum Schutz des Naturbadesees" (Friends of the Woog – Citizens' Initiative for the Protection of the Natural Bathing Lake) .
Cuny served continuously on the board from 1973 to 2023 , almost 20 of those years as chairman . Since 2024, he has been a member of the extended board as honorary chairman . During his tenure, funded numerous projects through which they supported the city of Darmstadt.
Donations for the preservation of the natural bathing lake
During Cuny's time on the board, the association financially supported numerous projects at the Woog, including:
- 15,289 euros for the renovation of the shower rooms in the island swimming pool
- 6,928 euros for repainting the doors in the family bathroom
- 5,803 euros for the construction of a rescue pier
- 3,012 euros for the renewal of the handrails on the steps leading into the water
- Further donations for trees, benches and infrastructure improvements
