Innovative robotics lab opens – research on AI and motor skills
The Technical University of Darmstadt has expanded its research portfolio with the addition of the state-of-the-art humanoid robot TALOS. It is one of only six such robots worldwide and the only one of its kind in Germany. The 1.75-meter-tall and 95-kilogram robot was acquired specifically for research into motor skills, artificial intelligence, and human-robot interaction.
As TU Darmstadt announced in a press release, TALOS will be used in the newly founded Laboratory for Humanoid Robotics at the Chair of Intelligent Autonomous Systems, headed by Professor Jan Peters. Laboratory director Dr. Oleg Arenz emphasizes:
"Thanks to its versatility, we can explore in detail the interplay between hardware-level motor control and abstract thinking through artificial intelligence."
TALOS can climb stairs, grasp objects precisely, walk on uneven terrain, and collaborate with human and mechanical colleagues . The acquisition costs of €1.8 million were financed equally by TU Darmstadt and the German Research Foundation (DFG).

With this new research platform, TU Darmstadt another milestone in the development of intelligent and human-like robotics.
