Green hydrogen production is expected to supply up to 40 buses from 2027 onwards
Darmstadt. Construction of an innovative hydrogen production plant on the grounds of the Darmstadt waste incineration plant will begin in October 2025. ENTEGA AG the contract to FEST GmbH from Goslar following an EU-wide tender. The project is part of the DELTA real-world laboratory funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy
The new plant has a capacity of three megawatts and is scheduled to begin regular operation first quarter of 2027. Around 310 tons of green hydrogen are expected to be produced annually – enough to power approximately 40 buses emission-free. Compared to diesel, this could save up to 4,000 tons of CO₂ .
Hydrogen for public transport in southern Hesse
The hydrogen produced is collected on-site via a trailer filling station and then public transport vehicles in the region . The focus is on its use in local public transport, where switching to hydrogen propulsion can make a significant contribution to reducing emissions.
Dr. Marie-Luise Wolff , CEO of ENTEGA AG, emphasizes:
"This project once again demonstrates that ENTEGA is a pioneer in the energy transition. Green hydrogen is becoming increasingly important in order to achieve climate protection goals. We are delighted that ENTEGA can make an exemplary contribution here."
The waste incineration plant is owned by the Zweckverband Abfallverwertung Südhessen (ZAS) , while ENTEGA is responsible for its operation. The start of construction marks a key milestone hydrogen strategy for the southern Hesse region
