Rally for IDAHOBIT* with Mayor Hanno Benz and the association vielbunt
On Saturday, May 17, 2025 , the City of Darmstadt and the association vielbunt e. V. for a rally to mark the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia, Transphobia and Queerphobia (IDAHOBITA) . The event will begin at 12 noon at the memorial "The Dark Side of the Rainbow" in Herrngarten (in front of the Welcome Hotel).
Mayor Benz: "Standing together against hatred and exclusion"
Under this year's motto, "The Power of Communities," the strength of solidarity alliances will be emphasized. Mayor Hanno Benz will deliver a welcoming address. He explains:
"Ideologies that oppose the rights of the LGBTQ+ community also call into question our free and democratic order. Therefore, it is important that we, as a city, support the queer community together with a broad alliance."
Rainbow flag as a symbol of visibility
The rainbow flag will be raised during the rally in front of the Welcome Hotel – a powerful symbol against discrimination and for diversity. Additionally, the rainbow flag will fly in Luisenplatz from May 17th to 23rd .
The city of Darmstadt and vielbunt e. V. have been actively working for years against exclusion and for the visibility of queer people.
Background: Why May 17th?
On May 17, 1990, the World Health Organization homosexuality from its list of mental disorders. Since then, this date has been observed worldwide as IDAHOBIT , the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, and for the Recognition of Sexual and Gender Diversity.
