EAD provides guidance on the correct disposal of electronic waste
A recent incident involving an incorrectly sorted electrical appliance, which triggered a fire brigade deployment on the premises of the municipal services company (EAD) of the city of Darmstadt, prompts the EAD to reiterate how to properly dispose of such devices: in the electronic waste collection container, at the EAD recycling center, or in retail stores.
“This recent incident demonstrates the importance of proper waste separation. Disposing of waste correctly not only protects the environment but also prevents potential harm to people and machinery,” said City Treasurer André Schellenberg. “Therefore, citizens should dispose of their waste correctly from the outset. In this case, the incident had a relatively fortunate outcome. However, incorrect waste sorting poses several risks. If undetected, such items can cause significant damage in recycling facilities. Furthermore, the waste – in this case, paper and the electronic device – must be disposed of as residual waste and cannot be recycled,” Schellenberg concluded.
During the incident, smoke developed in a vehicle collecting paper, cardboard, and cartons. The driver dumped approximately half of the load on the EAD premises, allowing the fire department to quickly extinguish the blaze. No one was injured, and the vehicle was not damaged. The fire was caused by an electrical appliance. The remaining parts suggest it was a cordless vacuum cleaner.
The EAD recycling center is open Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesdays from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. It is located on the EAD premises at Sensfelderweg 33 in Darmstadt.
