New markings and bollards from March 2nd
The city of Darmstadt will be redesigning the intersection of Heinrich-Delp-Straße, Schillerstraße and Am Steinern Kreuz starting Monday, March 2nd. Road markings and the installation of bollards are intended to significantly improve traffic safety.
As mobility officer Paul Georg Wandrey announces, the intersection will be made clearer, the speed of motor vehicle traffic will be reduced and safety for pedestrians and cyclists will be sustainably improved.
Crossings will be significantly shortened
Heinrich-Delp-Straße is an important north-south connection for cyclists. Its importance will increase further with the continued development of the Ludwigshöhe district. It is also part of the school route plan for the Frankensteinschule in Darmstadt.
Until now, pedestrians at the generously sized intersection had to cross roadways up to 14 meters wide or take detours. At the same time, the good visibility repeatedly led to excessive speeds in car traffic.
As part of the redesign, turning radii will be significantly reduced. This will lower the crossing width to approximately six meters. Newly marked areas will be secured with bollards. Additionally, so-called "shark's teeth" markings will be installed at all intersection approaches to clarify the right-of-way rules. The existing "Cologne plates," which had occasionally led to falls by cyclists, will be removed.
