Democratically legitimized structure for approximately 100 day care providers
Childminders in Darmstadt have elected their own representative body for the first time. With the election on February 25th, the professional group gains a democratically legitimized and officially established structure to represent their professional interests.
Melanie Kerth, Abdul Wahedi, Christine Becker, Betina Niebling, Natalie Wahedi and Kerstin Rexroth were elected.
Mayor Barbara Akdeniz expressly welcomed the election. She stated that childminding is an indispensable component of childcare provision in Darmstadt. It is characterized by family-oriented, flexible, and high-quality educational and care services. The election of the representative body is a step towards the further professionalization and structural strengthening of childminding. The city of Darmstadt looks forward to a constructive and collaborative partnership.
Important role in the under-3s sector
According to Section 23 of the German Social Code, Book VIII (SGB VIII), childminding is an equivalent form of childcare. It represents a particularly important component of the municipal childcare landscape, especially for children under three.
The new representation structure aims to consolidate the concerns of childminders and communicate them transparently to the administration. The advocacy group serves as a central point of contact for professional, organizational, and structural issues. Its goal is to systematically incorporate development needs, framework conditions, and quality aspects.
The city views the first-ever election as an important step towards strengthening childcare in Darmstadt.
