Darmstadt celebrates diversity, cosmopolitanism and the commitment of migrant associations
Darmstadt. Under the motto "Living Openness to the World," the city of Darmstadt, a center of science and research, invites everyone to the International Encounter Festival on Friedensplatz (Peace Square Saturday, August 30, 2025 , starting at noon . Together with the Foreigners' Advisory Council, the city will recognize the diverse commitment of numerous migrant associations, town twinning initiatives, and civil society groups.
A celebration of democracy and diversity
The festival will be officially opened at 3 p.m. by Mayor Hanno Benz and Ibrahim Akbulut , Chairman of the Foreigners' Advisory Council. Benz emphasizes the importance of the festival:
"This festival is a celebration of a democratic, free, and cosmopolitan Darmstadt. It aims to highlight the importance of migrant, partnership, and friendship associations and initiatives, and to honor their work."
On this day, Friedensplatz transforms into a place of exchange: with international specialties, information booths, music, and dance from around the world. For the youngest guests, there's a large children's area with a bouncy castle and games . The highlight of the evening is the performance by the Darmstadt band "Electric Horseman" starting at 6 p.m.
Recognition for voluntary work
Mayor Benz expressly acknowledges the role of the associations:
“For decades, Darmstadt’s migrant and partnership associations have been key players in civil society. They advise, mediate, help, and are important contacts and dialogue partners – both for their communities and for the city.”
Foreigners' Advisory Council also makes a significant contribution to municipal integration efforts and is an important contact for policymakers. The city considers strengthening these structures and developing them further in close cooperation to be part of its integration strategy.
