Mayor Hanno Benz wishes much success in sporting and cultural exchange
Darmstadt/Tallinn. A delegation from Darmstadt is eagerly awaiting the International School Games (ICG) in Tallinn this Saturday. From August 3 to 8, 2025, 18 young people , accompanied by three coaches and delegation leader Felix Gerbig will represent the science city at the internationally recognized multi-sport event.
Mayor and Head of Sports Hanno Benz sends his best wishes to the team before their departure:
"I wish our delegation much success, fair competitions, and above all, many exciting encounters at the International School Games in Tallinn. It's a fantastic opportunity to showcase athletic talent and, at the same time, make new friends through sport."
The International School Games, recognized by the International Olympic Committee, bring together more than 1,000 young people between the ages of 12 and 15 from all over the world each year. The focus is not only on athletic competition, but also on cultural exchange, mutual understanding, and international friendship .
Darmstadt with a special connection to the ICG
Darmstadt looks back on a long and close association with the ICG format:
- The city has already hosted the International School Games three times.
- Former head of the sports department, Torsten Rasch, was president of the organization for many years.
- Darmstadt is still the only German city with a membership in the ICG General Assembly.
In terms of sports, Team Darmstadt traditionally competes in athletics and swimming —disciplines in which the city has been strong for years. New this year is the participation in beach volleyball : For the first time, a team from Darmstadt will be competing on the sand.
The group's first shared experience was at this year's Darmstadt Corporate Run , where the young people volunteered at the finish line. It was an opportunity to get to know each other and bond as a team – before the race now goes international.
