City Councillor Wandrey sees great potential for major urban projects
Darmstadt/Berlin – The science city of Darmstadt was represented for the first time this year at the renowned IPA conference, which took place on July 2nd in Berlin under the motto "Successfully Shaping Construction Projects Together". Around 600 specialists and managers from the construction and real estate industry participated in the event, which was organized by the Competence Center for Integrated Project Management.
For Darmstadt, transport officer Paul Georg Wandrey , DSE managing director Bernd Neis and Prof. Robert Karnes , head of the mobility and civil engineering office, travelled to the conference.
Integrated project delivery as a future model
The focus was on the so-called Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) – an innovative model in which planning and execution are intertwined from the outset through partnership and contractual agreements . The aim is to significantly reduce construction delays and cost overruns.
“This method is already being successfully used in federal construction projects for large-scale civilian and military projects. It also offers great potential for the science city of Darmstadt – for example, for future major projects in the areas of mobility, civil engineering and building construction,” said City Councillor Paul Georg Wandrey.
Experiences from federal construction projects were incorporated
Professor Robert Karnes, former head of the Federal Office for Major Projects, contributed his many years of experience in dealing with cooperative contract models. He emphasized: "IPA requires a fundamental change in thinking – away from mistrust, towards a 'best for project' approach . This only works with suitable partners and genuine trust."
DSE Managing Director Bernd Neis also emphasized the opportunities: Especially in urban construction projects with many stakeholders, IPA could make planning processes more efficient and resources could be used better.
Darmstadt plans next steps
For the Darmstadt delegation, participation in the conference was not only an exchange of experiences, but also a source of inspiration: "We will intensively evaluate the insights gained and examine how we can use the methodology of integrated project management in Darmstadt in the future," Wandrey concluded.
