St. John Passion in the city center church of St. Ludwig
On March 29, 2025, exactly 300 years after its first performance in 1725, a concert featuring Johann Sebastian Bach's St. John Passion will take place in St. Ludwig Church in Darmstadt.
The 1725 version differs from the more frequently heard later version in a few arias and chorales, thus bringing to light rarely performed, but all the more exciting, parts of the work. The soloists for this performance are Fabian Kelly (Evangelist/Tenor), Michael Roman (Words of Christ), Rahel Maas (Soprano), Julia Diefenbach (Alto), and Johannes Hill (Bass). The Darmstadt Vocal Ensemble and the Main Baroque Orchestra perform under the direction of Jorin Sandau.

An introductory lecture with Prof. Dr. Ansgar Wucherpfennig SJ and Jorin Sandau will take place on Saturday, March 22nd at 6 pm in the Caritas Hall/St. Ludwig (in the courtyard of Wilhelminenplatz 9). The event is organized by the Academy of the Diocese of Mainz. In addition to a theological and musical introduction to the works, the lecture will focus primarily on the sensitive and topical issue of anti-Judaism within the Christian tradition.
