Bluegrass and folk music on March 27th at the Bessunger Knabenschule (Bessunger Boys' School)
The bluegrass band Johnny & the Yooahoos will be performing for the first time in Darmstadt's "Americana" concert series on Friday, March 27th. The concert will take place in the hall of the Bessunger Knabenschule (Bessunger Boys' School). The concert starts at 8 pm, with doors opening at 7 pm.
Johnny & the Yooahoos hail from Upper Bavaria and have been active in the European bluegrass and folk scene since 2018. From performances on smaller stages, they have developed an increasing international presence in recent years, including appearances at festivals in France, Ireland, the Netherlands, Austria, and Switzerland.
A significant step followed in 2025: As winners of the IBMA International Band Grant, the band toured the USA for five weeks. Stops included the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville and the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival in New York.
Musically, the group relies on acoustic instruments such as banjo, mandolin, guitar, and double bass, complemented by three-part vocals. Their style ranges from traditional bluegrass to modern folk – sometimes energetic, sometimes calm and atmospheric.
Americana curator Thomas Waldherr announces a special concert evening: “We are very pleased to welcome Johnny And the Yooahoos, a fresh, young, German bluegrass band.”
