Lecture with Bettina Wurche at the Hessian State Museum Darmstadt
The Darmstadt Natural Science Association, in cooperation with the Hessian State Museum Darmstadt, you to an evening lecture on science, literature, and marine research. On Wednesday, February 18, 2026 Bettina Wurche , biologist, science journalist, and science blogger, will speak "Jules Verne and the Discovery of Marine Research .
The evening's focus is on the famous novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and its scientific background. Jules Verne is considered the inventor of the science fiction novel. He lived in a time of profound technological and scientific upheaval and incorporated the latest discoveries of his era into exciting adventure stories. His works combine expert knowledge with narrative imagination and remain remarkably relevant today.
In her lecture, Bettina Wurche explores how closely Verne's literary visions are linked to the emergence of modern marine research. She presented her book of the same name at the Leipzig Book Fair in March 2025. That summer, it was nominated by the magazine "Bild der Wissenschaft" for the 2025 Science Book of the Year award in the "Surprise" category.
The lecture begins at 6:00 PM . Admission is free, but seating is limited. Advance reservations are not possible.
