Participatory fruit tree care activities strengthen nature experience and community
At the Donaustraße and Hölderlinstraße daycare centers in Dornheim, education about nature and food is not just theoretical, but experienced firsthand. Together with the Dornheim Fruit and Horticulture Association (OGV), children, parents, and staff implemented a hands-on project on fruit tree care.
New row of fruit trees for the Donaustraße daycare center
As part of a new partnership, the Donaustraße daycare center has taken over a row of six apple trees. The trees can now be jointly cultivated and used free of charge.
Since the apple trees hadn't been pruned for about three years, the focus of the activity was on proper pruning techniques. Participants gained practical insights into the care of fruit trees and the basics of a successful harvest.
Involvement of several families
At the same time, the Hölderlinstraße daycare center, which has been tending its own row of fruit trees for some time, took care of its trees. Several families worked simultaneously on the grounds of the fruit and gardening club, supporting the work with great dedication.
The event offered not only hands-on nature experiences but also an opportunity for parents, children, and club members to connect. The morning was organized by the club's board. Refreshments were also provided: drinks, cake, warm soup, and sausages were available for a donation.
According to those involved, the participatory campaign was a successful example of cooperation between daycare centers and community organizations in the district.
