99 childcare places planned – city sees important milestone for inner-city development
With the ceremonial laying of the foundation stone on Thursday (April 8), Mayor Barbara Akdeniz and City Treasurer André Schellenberg officially launched the construction of a new municipal daycare center at Marienplatz. The new building will be erected on the western part of the former parking lot in a prime city center location.
The plan is for a modern, two-story daycare center with 99 places, designed as a timber-framed structure with a roof terrace and a spacious garden. The Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB) will be the operator. The opening is scheduled for autumn 2026.
“This inner-city area, which has long been used as a parade ground and most recently as a parking lot, will undergo a fundamental transformation,” explained Akdeniz and Schellenberg. “With the new daycare center, we are sending an important signal for the expansion of childcare capacity in the city center and simultaneously creating a higher quality of life in a growing neighborhood.”
The new daycare center is part of a 1.4-hectare urban development project, which was awarded to Implenia AG following an investor and planning competition held in 2019. In collaboration with the Darmstadt-based firm "netzwerkarchitekten," approximately 320 rental and owner-occupied apartments, some of which will be subsidized housing, as well as small commercial units, are being built on the site.
The daycare center will be built on the portion of the property that remains in the ownership of the city's real estate management (IDA).
