99 care places planned - city sees important milestone for inner city development
With the ceremonial laying of the foundation on Thursday (April 8), Mayor Barbara Akdeniz and city treasurer André Schellenberg gave the starting signal for the construction of a new city day care center on Marienplatz. The new building is being built on the western part of the previous parking lot in the direct city center location.
A modern, two-storey daycare building with 99 care places is planned, which is designed as a timber building with a roof terrace and spacious garden. The Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB) takes over the sponsorship. The opening is planned for autumn 2026.
"This inner city area, which has been used as an parade and most recently used as a parking lot, will experience a fundamental change," said Akdeniz and Schellenberg. "With the new daycare center, we set an important signal for the expansion of childcare capacities in the city center and at the same time create more quality of life in a growing quarters."
The new daycare center is part of a 1.4 hectare urban development project that was awarded to Implenia AG in the course of an investor and planning competition carried out in 2019. In cooperation with the Darmstadt office "Network Architects", around 320 rental and condominiums are being built on the site, including a part as a subsidized living space, as well as small-scale commercial units.
The daycare center is realized on the property share, which has remained owned by urban real estate management (IDA).
