New daycare center in the southwest residential area is expected to open in August 2025
The opening of the new Sophie-Scholl-Straße daycare center, originally planned for the end of 2024, has been delayed. This is due to water damage caused by a defect in the heating system at the end of November 2024. The facility, located in the southwest residential area, is now expected to open in mid-August 2025.
Construction on schedule – until the water damage
The modern, two-story daycare center, covering an area of 2,572 square meters, offers space for 123 children in seven groups – including four nursery groups for 48 children on the ground floor and three groups for children over three years old, for 75 children on the upper floor. Despite weather-related delays and supply bottlenecks, construction proceeded largely according to plan until autumn 2024.
Thanks to the general contractor's swift response following the water damage, more extensive consequential damage was avoided. Claims settlement is contractually the responsibility of the general contractor – the city of Griesheim bears no financial risk .
Renovation is underway – the daycare center is scheduled for completion this summer
The necessary evidence gathering and the preparation of expert reports initially led to delays, but since mid-February 2025, the insurance company has given its approval for the renovation. This work has already begun and is scheduled for completion by mid-June 2025. The furnishing and fitting-out will follow, with the opening planned August 2025
Modern and sustainable equipment
The new daycare center meets current technical and energy standards . The barrier-free, modular timber building operated energy-efficiently by a photovoltaic system on the green roof , a heat pump , and a ventilation system with heat recovery passive house standard .
A spacious outdoor area offers children plenty of room to play and run around. The Sophie-Scholl-Straße daycare center thus also represents sustainable and family-friendly urban development in Griesheim.
