Children experience nature up close – a joint potato festival is planned for autumn
Reinheim – A private piece of nature that grows, blooms, and demands responsibility: The Zauberwald (Magic Forest) daycare center opened a new garden in April – and with it, launched a special educational project. Together with the support of dedicated fathers, a protective fence was first erected. Since then, the children have had their own garden – for planting, watering, and marveling .
“We wanted to give the children the opportunity not just to observe nature, but to truly experience it – with all their senses and with a great deal of responsibility,” said the daycare center director. For the initial planting, they chose potatoes , which loosen the soil and are well-suited for beginners.
Small gardeners with big goals
The children enthusiastically grabbed shovels and planted potatoes, corn, and pumpkins – plants that had been started indoors at the daycare center. Handmade signs now mark what's growing in each bed. And the little gardeners also tackled their first challenges: potato beetles together – without fear, but with great enthusiasm.
The first gardening season will be celebrated in autumn with a potato festival . Parents will also be invited to enjoy the harvest. And the children already have plans for next year: strawberries – lots and lots of them !
Experience nature, strengthen community
Mayor Manuel Feick was enthusiastic about the project:
"It's impressive to see how much enthusiasm the children have for their garden. Projects like this not only strengthen their connection to nature, but also their sense of community."
