New arrival in the elephant park: Cologne Zoo celebrates a small sensation – a visit is always worthwhile
A baby Asian elephant was born at Cologne Zoo on March 7, 2025 – the 14th calf in the history of the elephant park. Still unnamed, but already full of curiosity, the baby elephant explores the spacious outdoor enclosure and the impressive elephant house with its herd. The birth of the little pachyderm is currently a special attraction for visitors of all ages – and a wonderful reason for a family outing to Cologne.
One of the largest elephant parks in Europe
Cologne Zoo's elephant park, covering 20,000 square meters, is one of the largest and most modern facilities north of the Alps. Eleven Asian elephants currently live here – led by matriarch Kreeblamduan – in a natural family group. The zoo places great emphasis on species-appropriate husbandry and uses modern training methods such as target training, which allows the animals to participate voluntarily and provides stress-free care.
Keeping elephants at Cologne Zoo has a history spanning over 160 years. Much has changed during this time: from cramped enclosures and direct contact with elephant hooks to today's exemplary park with animal-friendly design, spacious outdoor areas, and a strict separation between animals and humans, which nevertheless allows for intensive care.
12,000 animals and exciting animal houses
But it's not just the elephants that make Cologne Zoo a worthwhile destination. Around 12,000 animals from all over the world live on the expansive grounds. Modern animal houses, such as the rainforest house or the aquarium, offer fascinating insights into the animal kingdom even in changeable weather. Spacious outdoor enclosures and idyllic park areas invite visitors to linger – a diverse experience for all ages.
