Commemorative event on November 9th sends a message against hatred and xenophobia
Groß-Gerau. To commemorate the Reichspogromnacht of 1938, the town of Groß-Gerau, together with its local churches, all citizens to participate in a memorial service on Sunday, November 9, 2025, at 6 p.m. The commemoration is intended to send a clear message against xenophobia, antisemitism, and right-wing extremism .
The event begins in front of the Groß-Gerau City Museum and proceeds with a silent march to the memorial site of the former synagogue in Adolf-Göbel-Straße , where speeches will follow.
Remembrance and Responsibility
“The Kristallnacht pogrom of 1938 is a dark chapter in our history. The memory of it must be preserved, and we will continue to stand firmly against hatred and prejudice,” explains Mayor Jörg Rüddenklau .
He emphasizes: “Our commemoration should not only remember the victims but also serve as a warning for the present. Let us work together for a society characterized by tolerance, diversity, and respect .”
A warning for the present
The night of November 9-10, 1938 , known as Kristallnacht , marks one of the darkest chapters in German history . Under the Nazi regime, synagogues were set on fire, Jewish businesses and homes were destroyed, property was looted, and Jews were brutally persecuted.
The memorial event in Groß-Gerau commemorates the victims of these acts of violence – and calls for decisive action against xenophobia and anti-Semitism .
