Heavy-duty crane lifts concrete component into the construction pit on Geinsheimer Straße
As the city of Riedstadt reports, a 24-ton junction structure was installed in the village of Leeheim early in the morning of November 18th. The heavy transport vehicle reached the construction site at the intersection of Geinsheimer Straße and Feldstraße in the early morning hours; later, a large crane precisely lifted the massive concrete component into the prepared excavation.
Central component for the new sewer system
The structure resembles a flat, roofless garage and features three large openings. Later, it will be completely buried underground and will collect wastewater from several different sewer lines. This junction structure is part of a comprehensive renovation of the sewer system in the village of Leeheim, whose infrastructure dates back to the 1960s and exhibited significant structural defects.
City utilities director Saskia Kirsch explains that the new pipes require significantly larger dimensions to handle both wastewater and rainwater. Due to the clay soil in Leeheim, infiltration is particularly difficult. Therefore, oval pipes with varying widths and heights were installed – 1.65 meters wide and 78 centimeters high on Geinsheimer Straße, and 1.75 meters wide and 85 centimeters high on Feldstraße. The pipes are made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic to ensure optimal drainage even with a slight gradient.
Precision work under confined conditions
Mayor Marcus Kretschmann observed the installation on site. He emphasized how it demonstrates the contributions being made to a stable, long-term infrastructure in Leeheim.
On that day, only the shell of the junction structure was initially assembled. The so-called "channel," which will later control the correct drainage inside, will be installed separately. "With the channel, the component would have weighed 42 tons and would not have been transportable," explains Markus Hennecke, responsible for civil engineering at the town hall. The nine-ton concrete slab will also only be put in place once all internal structures are completed and the sewers are connected.
Once the ceiling, floor and road surface have been restored, only a small round cover will remain visible above the site – the only thing that will remind people of the work that took place under the road.
