Left-back joins from Lyngby BK in southern Hesse / Paul Fernie praises technique, intensity and playing style
SV Darmstadt 98 has filled another gap in its squad shortly before the start of training: Left-back Leon Klassen (25) is transferring from Danish first division club Lyngby BK to the Lilies. The native of Rhineland-Palatinate brings international experience from Austria, Russia and Denmark and is expected to strengthen the left side of the defense.
Paul Fernie, sporting director of SV 98, explains: “Leon Klassen is a technically and tactically strong full-back with an exciting profile. His intensity and commitment bring qualities that we want to embody in our style of play. Over the past few years – especially last season in the Danish Superliga – Leon has developed steadily. We all agree that his move to Darmstadt 98 comes at exactly the right time.”
Klassen: “I’m looking forward to attacking with a traditional club.”
Leon Klassen is also highly motivated about his move to the 2nd Bundesliga: "When the contact came about, I didn't have to think about it for long. My goal has always been to return to Germany. I'm very happy to now be able to compete in the second division with a traditional club like Darmstadt 98."
The defender also emphasizes the importance of a full training camp: "Being there from day one and being able to complete the entire preparation with the team is, in my opinion, very helpful for integration."
Stations in Cologne, Munich, Tyrol, Moscow and Lyngby
Leon Klassen was trained at the youth academies of 1. FC Köln and TSV 1860 Munich, among others. At 1860 Munich, he made the direct jump to the professional squad and made 19 appearances in his first season in the third division. In 2021, he moved to WSG Tirol in the Austrian Bundesliga, where he provided six assists in 20 games.
In January 2022, Klassen signed with Spartak Moscow. In the summer of 2023, he moved to Denmark, where he made 23 appearances for Lyngby BK. He also played for Russia's youth national teams at the U17 to U21 levels.
Klassen will wear the number 3 jersey .
