Access via Heidelberger Straße is now possible again from both directions
The underground parking garage of the local supermarket in the Lincoln district of Darmstadt is now accessible again from both directions of Heidelberger Straße. The City of Darmstadt has reviewed and adjusted the traffic regulations introduced last year.
The aim of the change is to make it easier for customers to enter and exit the building. The change was prompted by discussions between the city, Nassauische Heimstätte (the building owner), and the local grocery store, which had pointed out limitations in accessing the underground parking garage.
Traffic management adjusted after test phase
The original traffic regulation was met with concerns from the road traffic authority and the police from the outset. Following a trial period last year, the situation was reassessed.
“Road safety is my top priority. Fortunately, after the trial last year, there was room for further development,” explains transport officer Paul Georg Wandrey.
In several discussions, the parties involved examined various possible solutions, including the relevant departments. As a result, a regulation was implemented that now again allows left turns from both directions.
Ensuring local supply in the neighborhood
According to the city, the adjustment is also intended to strengthen local services in the neighborhood.
“A functioning local supply system is part of essential public services. Anyone who develops neighborhoods must also ensure that they remain practical in everyday life – for families, for the elderly, for working people,” said Wandrey.
The city intends to continue reviewing feedback from practical experience and – provided it is legally and technically feasible – to implement improvements.
