The extension at the timetable change improves connections to the main train station and vocational school center
Commuters and students will benefit from improved tram connections between Darmstadt Central Station and Kranichstein starting with the timetable change on December 13, 2026. Tram line 2 will then be extended to Kranichstein station during peak hours.
The extended service applies Mondays to Fridays on school and lecture days at TU Darmstadt. Between 6 and 9 a.m. and 1 and 5 p.m., trams run every 30 minutes via Bismarckstraße and Willy-Brandt-Platz to Kranichstein.
With this additional service, passengers from Kranichstein will once again have a direct connection to the main train station. At the same time, the vocational school center at Nordbad will also be connected to the main train station without requiring a transfer.
“The direct connection to the main train station has been a long-standing wish from Kranichstein. We are now taking up this wish and creating a practical improvement for the district,” explains Mobility Officer Paul Georg Wandrey.
The extension of line 2 is part of the approved tram concept 2.0, which the city of Darmstadt is implementing together with HEAG mobilo. According to the city, the additional services can be implemented cost-neutrally through savings and a more efficient design of the transport service elsewhere.
