City responds to complaints and increased traffic volume – modal filters for greater safety
Through traffic for cars will be prohibited on the southern ring road Maria-Theresia-Straße and St.-Stephans-Platz . The aim of the measure is to increase traffic safety and relieve the area of unauthorized through traffic . The plan is to install a so-called modal filter , for example in the form of a bollard or post, which will still allow bicycle and pedestrian traffic but reliably exclude motorized vehicles .
Traffic congestion leads to concrete measures
The section of road is currently only open to residents and those with property rights – nevertheless, according to the city administration, it has been regularly driven through illegally by motorists . Traffic measurements and checks by the city police have confirmed a persistently high volume of traffic , leading to dangerous situations.
The main problem is the shared use of the narrow road space by pedestrians, cyclists, and cars – there is no sidewalk at all. Expanding this section is not feasible, as the road width does not allow for a safe separation of the different modes of transport .
Implementation planned – safety in focus
Based on these findings, the city council decided on May 26, 2025, to close the southern ring road to motorized traffic. The exact design of the modal filter is currently being prepared. Residents have already been informed .
The aim is to prevent dangerous situations and to make the road space safe and conflict-free for cyclists and pedestrians in the future. A date for implementation will be announced after the detailed planning is complete.
