Alliance for Democracy and Diversity, against Hate and Racism - Solutions
The district-wide alliance meeting against right-wing extremism and racism in the Groß-Gerau district, together with the Groß-Gerau city action alliance against right-wing extremism, hosted a meeting at the end of January. Thirty-five members of alliances, initiatives, and organizations attended the event at the district administration office. Three committed individuals, not affiliated with any alliances, also attended to contribute to the network for democracy and diversity.
At the beginning, the goal of the alliance's work was emphasized: to advocate, across party lines, for the strengthening and defense of democracy, for the protection of human rights, and for the inviolability of the human dignity of all people: "We reject all forms of extremism, racism, and discrimination." Since new initiatives and alliances had formed in the past year, the meeting on January 31st focused on getting to know one another, exchanging ideas, and networking. Another key focus of the evening was planning actions ahead of the federal elections.
The alliance meeting focused on how to reach and engage in dialogue with those who are dissatisfied with current politics and have become skeptical of democracy. The social inequality in Germany is a reality and poses significant challenges for many individuals and organizations. Nevertheless, it is crucial to make it clear that the scapegoating of people propagated in far-right narratives, the deportation of migrants, or the closure of borders are not solutions to the country's social problems. On the contrary, the participants agreed that Germany depends on immigration.
There was also consensus on the following point: Because far-right and racist narratives are heard and read daily in political debates and in the media, far-right ideologies are increasingly becoming "normal." This fuels racism. Particularly on social media, keywords are deliberately used to evoke emotions in people, making them more susceptible to far-right ways of thinking.
Representatives of the "Initiative Mensch Sein" (Being Human Initiative) in the Groß-Gerau district pointed out that young people, in particular, get their information and are active on social media. To reach them with information about the alliance, those present agreed to pool existing resources and use the "Initiative Mensch Sein" account in the Groß-Gerau district to set the agenda before the federal elections. The posts created will then be shared by everyone and distributed across various social media platforms.
At the end of the meeting, participants exchanged ideas in small groups about upcoming actions and topics such as social media and education. The specialist agency provided information about the possibility of applying for funding and will also coordinate networking. A district-wide meeting is already planned for June 5, 2025, to continue working together to promote democracy, human rights, and diversity.
