Day of death of the former regional president and co -designer of the Basic Law
On the 65th anniversary of the death of Darmstadt on March 23, 2025, the work of Ludwig Bergsträsser (1883–1960), one of the most influential political minds of the post -war period in Hesse, is reminiscent of the work of Ludwig Bergsträsser. Bergstrasse played a central role in democratic reconstruction after 1945 as the first head of government of Starkenburg and government president in Darmstadt.
Mayor Hanno Benz recognizes him as a "pioneer and switch deployment of liberal democracy". Benz Bergsträsser's commitment to the Hessian State Constitution and the Basic Law emphasizes in particular, and when elaborating it significantly participated in the parliamentary council.
Prime Minister and pioneer of democracy
On behalf of the US military government, Bergstresser built up a new administration in Hesse on the right bank of the Rhine from April 1945. This development led to the foundation of the State of Hesse. From 1945 to 1948 he was president of Darmstadt. With the integration of the former provinces Starkenburg and Oberhessen, he laid the foundation for today's Darmstadt administrative district.
Resistance to National Socialism
Ludwig Bergsträsser has lived on Heinrichstrasse in Darmstadt since 1934. He was part of the civilian network of resistance to Wilhelm Leuschner and wrote memoranda on the political reorganization of Germany. After the failed attack of July 20, 1944, he barely escaped the arrest by the Nazi regime.
Political and academic merits
From 1946 to 1949, Bergstresser was a member of the state parliament in Hesse, 1949 to 1953 Bundestag MP. He was particularly committed to civic education and the establishment of political science. From 1950 he taught as a fee professor at the University of Bonn and was a member of the German Academy of Language and Poetry in Darmstadt.
Ludwig Bergstresser was born on February 23, 1883 in Altkirch in Alsatian. He died on March 23, 1960 in Darmstadt. His tomb is located in the old cemetery.
