Threatened fresh water type in the aquarium hall of the Tiergarten
The Vivarium Darmstadt Zoo has a new attraction: from now on Madagasy earfish in a showcase . The endangered fresh water species has been in the zoo since August 2024 , but has only now been visibly housed in the aquarium hall for visitors. The 14 original animals come from the Schwerin Zoo young people in Darmstadt .

Many animal species in Madagascar are threatened with extinction . The reasons for this are water pollution, the destruction of natural habitats and introduced predatory fish that decimate the domestic stocks. In order to contribute to the preservation of this type of fish, the Vivarium Darmstadt zoo in a breeding program of the “Citizen Conservation” species protection organization .
The Tiergarten has been officially working with "Citizen Conservation" since July 2023 . The first contacts to the program have existed since 2018 .
