Endangered freshwater species now on display in the aquarium hall of the zoo
's Vivarium Madagascan silversides can now in a display tank . This endangered freshwater species has been at the zoo since August 2024 , but could only now be housed in the aquarium hall for visitors to see. The 14 original fish came from Schwerin Zoo offspring in Darmstadt .

Many animal species in Madagascar are threatened with extinction . Reasons for this include water pollution, the destruction of natural habitats , and introduced predatory fish that decimate native populations. To contribute to the conservation of this fish species, the Vivarium Zoo Darmstadt in a breeding program run by the species conservation organization "Citizen Conservation .
The zoo has been officially collaborating with "Citizen Conservation" since July 2023. Initial contacts with the program date back to 2018 .

The Vivarium Zoo is committed to protecting endangered species and offers visitors the opportunity to learn about sustainability and species conservation . The new Madagascan silversides are another example of the zoo's commitment in this area.
