UNILAC linear accelerator heavily affected – FAIR construction site undamaged
Following the major fire on the campus of the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt early Thursday morning, damage assessments at GSI/FAIR are in full swing. The institution reports that the fire has now been extinguished. The construction site for the future international accelerator center FAIR remained unaffected by the fire.
The cause of the fire is currently being investigated by the relevant authorities. No one was injured. There was no danger to the neighborhood at any time.
Crisis management took swift action
GSI/FAIR's management thanked the emergency services for their swift and professional action. Initial assessments indicate that the internal emergency procedures functioned reliably. The buildings and campus were evacuated quickly and completely. Cooperation with the fire department and authorities also proceeded smoothly.
UNILAC severely affected
The UNILAC linear accelerator building was severely affected by the fire. Due to the damage, experimental operation of the accelerator facility is currently not possible.
GSI/FAIR announced a comprehensive analysis to assess the impact on infrastructure, technical facilities, and scientific operations. Management is in close contact with the relevant departments and ministries and authorities regarding this analysis.
The aim is to manage the consequences of the fire as quickly as possible and to resume research operations. Appropriate measures to ensure the continuity of scientific work will be initiated.
