Works by the Darmstadt Expressionist artist can be seen until January 2026
As the Darmstadt Art Archive announces, the institution will launch its new exhibition program with selected works by the artist Maria von Heider-Schweinitz . The exhibition "Image and Self-Image" will be on display until January 9, 2026.
Johanna Maria Lina Countess von Schweinitz und Krain, Baroness von Kauder, born in Darmstadt in 1894, is considered part of the second generation of Expressionists. After her youth in Berlin and a period working in sculpture, she turned to painting in 1932. A close friendship with Karl Schmidt-Rottluff encouraged her in this direction.
Her first oil paintings in the expressive style were created in 1934 – at a time when Expressionism had officially fallen into disrepute. Nevertheless, Heider-Schweinitz continued to work consistently. Her paintings – predominantly oil on canvas – depict landscapes, still lifes, and figure paintings. Particularly striking is the recurring portrayal of a female archetype, who often bears a resemblance to the artist herself.
Despite personal setbacks, the painter remained true to her artistic vision. She died in Frankfurt am Main in 1974 at the age of 80.
Further information about the exhibition can be found on the website of the Darmstadt Art Archive.
