Opening on September 21st with Mayor Hanno Benz and art historian Dr. Katrin Thomschke
The Darmstadt Art Archive is launching its new exhibition program and, under the title "Maria von Heider-Schweinitz – Image and Self-Image", selected works by the artist, who is associated with the second generation of Expressionists.
Maria von Heider-Schweinitz, born in Darmstadt in 1894, turned to painting in 1932 – encouraged by her friendship with Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. While Expressionism officially fell into disrepute in Germany, she worked largely in obscurity. Her works – landscapes, still lifes, and especially figure paintings – are characterized by sensual expressiveness. A striking feature is the recurring depiction of a particular type of woman, who often resembles the artist herself.

After several setbacks, Heider-Schweinitz withdrew from public life and died in Frankfurt am Main in 1974.
The exhibition will open on September 21, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. Mayor Hanno Benz will give a welcoming address, and the introduction will be given by art historian Dr. Katrin Thomschke , who has been in charge of the collection at the Hessian State Museum in Darmstadt since May 2025. Sophie Lieb , the artist's great-granddaughter, is expected as a guest of honor.
