Local amenities in the Darmstadt district are expected to return by 2026
The SPD Darmstadt welcomes the planned reopening of the former REWE supermarket on Schwarzer Weg as a new EDEKA branch. As SPD parliamentary group and local branch chairman Michael Siebel reports, it is thanks to the intervention of Mayor Hanno Benz that the local supply of goods in the neighborhood will likely be secured this year.
The closure in the summer of 2024 left a noticeable gap, especially for older people, including many residents of the "Im Schwarzen Weg" senior living complex owned by Bauverein-AG. The nearest supermarket in the Martinsviertel district is about two kilometers away and is only accessible by bus for people with limited mobility.
Protests after closure
After the market closed, the reactions in the neighborhood were clear. In addition to older people, residents of the surrounding areas also expressed criticism of the loss of a local shopping option.
According to the SPD, Mayor Benz became involved in the negotiations. Market operator Daniel Patschull, who already runs markets in Arheilgen, Heimstättensiedlung, Eberstadt and Kranichstein, ultimately took over the property and initiated renovation work.
Market planned with 18,000 products
After approximately two years of renovation, a market with around 18,000 products is planned to open on approximately 800 square meters of retail space. This will once again provide pedestrian access not only to the immediate surroundings but also to the adjacent composers' quarter.
The SPD sees this development as a signal that local politics can also have an influence on privately operated local suppliers.
