Frankenstein-Bühne brings classics to the stage with a contemporary twist
The Frankenstein-Bühne e. V. (Frankenstein Stage Association) presents "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein," one of the most important works in literary history, on the stage of the Ernst-Ludwig-Saal in Darmstadt-Eberstadt. The premiere is on Friday, February 13, 2026, at 7:30 p.m.
In the adaptation by author Christian Schidlowsky and directed by Yvonne Raftopoulo, the classic play is reinterpreted and placed in a contemporary context. Themes such as responsibility in science, artificial intelligence, genetic engineering, and the question of humanity are central to the story.
A timeless fabric with current relevance
Viktor Frankenstein creates a living being from inanimate matter – driven by longing, ambition, and scientific genius. But what begins as a triumph develops into a nightmare of guilt, loneliness, and revenge.

The created being seeks closeness and recognition, but experiences rejection and hatred. The creator loses himself in his own idea. Thus, the play poses questions that have lost none of their relevance more than 200 years after the novel's publication: How far can humanity go? What makes us human? And who is the true monster in the end?
The production promises an evening of theatre that blends horror, emotion and philosophical depth.
