Flag day of the "Mayors for Peace" on July 8, 2025 on Luisenplatz - no common rally with the Peace Forum
On Tuesday, July 8, 2025, the science city of Darmstadt will take part again on the international flag day of the Mayors for Peace ("Mayor for Peace") on Tuesday, July 8, 2025 on Tuesday, July 8, 2025. On the Luisenplatz, the flag of the network and the "NO-Nein-Njet" flag are raised-as a sign of a nuclear weapons-free and peaceful world.
Mayor Hanno Benz emphasizes the meaning of this symbol:
“80 years ago, people in Hiroshima and Nagasaki experienced the indescribable horror of the atomic bombing. The survivors, the Hibakusha have been urging us since then. Especially today - in view of increasing global tensions and a new nuclear refinement - this is more important than ever. Humanity. "
The city of Darmstadt sets a visible sign against nuclear upgrade, wars and for peaceful coexistence worldwide with the hoist of the flags. The science city has been a member of the international network since 1998, which today belongs to over 8,480 cities from 166 countries - including around 900 municipalities from Germany.
No common rally with Friedensforum
In contrast to earlier years, there will be no common rally with the "Darmstadt Peace Forum" in 2025. According to the city, the reason for this is that the Peace Forum belongs to the so -called Darmstadt peace alliance, which was recently noticed by statements with anti -Semitic tendencies. A clear distance has so far failed, explains Mayor Benz.
Background: Mayors for Peace
Mayors for Peace initiative was launched in 1982 by the then Mayor Hiroshimas, Takeshi Araki. It is committed to atomic disarmament and a global peace order. The reason for the annual flag day is a legal opinion of the International Court of Justice of July 8, 1996, which classifies the use and threat of nuclear weapons as a violation of international law.
