80 years after Hiroshima and Nagasaki: clear message for disarmament and against nuclear weapons
On July 8, 2025, the Groß-Gerau district set a strong sign: With the raving of the flag of the international initiative "Mayors for Peace", the district administration took part in a global day of action for peace and nuclear disarmament. The occasion is the 80th anniversary of atomic bombing on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945.
600 municipalities committed themselves to a world without nuclear weapons on this day. District Administrator Thomas wants to have the flag at the district office in Groß-Gerau and emphasized the urgency of the concern.
"Nuclear weapons are a risk of humanity"
"These terrible weapons of mass destruction that have brought endless suffering must never be used again," said the district administrator. "Nuclear weapons no longer create security, but are a risk to humanity and the entire globe. We demand disarmament instead of upgrading."
In addition to the memory of the victims, it is also about the current global political situation: The Stockholm Peace Research Institute Sipri currently estimates the number of nuclear warheads worldwide at around 12,241 . All nine nuclear powers modernize their arsenale - China in particular is expanding its capacities rapidly. New Start Treaty will threaten from 2026 , which will fear a new nuclear armaments.
Background: What is the flag day?
The flag day commemorates a legal opinion from the International Court of Justice in the Hague of July 8, 1996. It was found that both the threat and the use of nuclear weapons violate international law. In addition, an obligation to international law was formulated to negotiate nuclear disarmament .
