Commemoration of the deportations of Jews and Sinti in 1942/43
On Sunday, September 28, 2025 , at 11 a.m. , the annual commemoration event to commemorate the deportations of Jews and Sinti from the former People's State of Hesse in 1942/43 will take place at the Darmstadt Freight Station Memorial Site
The event is organized by the "Gedenkbahnhof Memorial" initiative , the Science City of Darmstadt , the Jewish Community of Darmstadt , the State Association of Sinti and Roma in Hesse , and the Alliances Against Right-Wing Extremism in South Hesse . Citizens and media representatives are invited.
Historical background
Darmstadt played a central role in the deportations. The first deportation of Jewish citizens took place on March 20, 1942. People from many southern Hessian towns and villages were first brought to Darmstadt and then deported from the freight station to the concentration and extermination camps in Poland.
Further large deportations took place on September 27 and 30 , 1942. On March 15, 1943 69 Sinti from Darmstadt and the surrounding area were deported by the Darmstadt criminal police.
Design of this year's commemoration
This year's program will be presented by students from the Bertolt Brecht School (assisted by Kirsti Ohr) and the Justus Liebig School Martin Grebenstein will provide musical accompaniment .
