Darmstadt Regional Council approves merger – merger will take effect on January 1, 2026
The merger of Sparkasse Dieburg and Stadt- und Kreis-Sparkasse Darmstadt was formally sealed on Tuesday (August 26) in the Darmstadt Regional Council's building. At the ceremony, Regional Council President Prof. Dr. Jan Hilligardt hailed it as a "historic day for the savings bank landscape in southern Hesse." With the approval of the supervisory authority, the path is clear for the new "Sparkasse Darmstadt und Dieburg" (Sparkasse Darmstadt and Dieburg) .
After intensive consultations, the sponsoring municipalities – the Science City of Darmstadt and the Darmstadt-Dieburg district – had prepared the merger. As of July 1, 2025, the savings bank association was renamed the "Sparkassenzweckverband Darmstadt und Dieburg," and the city of Darmstadt was admitted prior to the merger. With the approval now in place, all legal requirements have been met, meaning the merger will take effect on January 1, 2026 .
District Administrator Klaus-Peter Schellhaas, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Sparkasse Dieburg, welcomed the decision: "In these times, what belongs together is growing together. We are pleased with the approval and see the new savings bank as a stable anchor in the region – for both private and business customers."
Darmstadt's mayor, Hanno Benz, also emphasized the importance: "The merger of the two savings banks is a wise step at the right time. Both institutions are very solid and will be further strengthened by the merger. For people and businesses in the region, this means even better and more competitive service."
