Darmstadt Regional Council approves merger – merger will take effect on January 1, 2026
The merger of Sparkasse Dieburg and Stadt- und Kreis-Sparkasse Darmstadt was formally sealed on Tuesday (August 26) in the administrative building of the Darmstadt Regional Council. Regional President Prof. Dr. Jan Hilligardt, speaking at the handover of the approval, called it a "historic day for the savings bank landscape in southern Hesse." With the approval of the supervisory authority, the way is now clear for the new "Sparkasse Darmstadt und Dieburg .
Following intensive consultations, the sponsoring municipalities – the City of Darmstadt and the Darmstadt-Dieburg district – prepared the merger. The savings bank association was renamed "Darmstadt and Dieburg Savings Bank Association" on July 1, 2025, with the City of Darmstadt joining even before the merger. With the approval now granted, all legal requirements have been met, and the merger will take effect on January 1, 2026 .
District Administrator Klaus-Peter Schellhaas, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Sparkasse Dieburg, welcomed the decision: “What belongs together in these times is growing together. We are pleased with the approval and see the new savings bank as a stable anchor in the region – for both private and business customers.”
Darmstadt's mayor, Hanno Benz, also emphasized the importance of the merger: "The merger of the two savings banks is a smart step at the right time. Both institutions are in a very solid position and will be further strengthened by the merger. For people and businesses in the region, this means an even better and more competitive service."
