Special exhibition launched at the Messel Pit World Heritage Site
A new special exhibition has opened at the Messel Pit: “Messel 30+ – Silver, Dinosaurs and Other Stones” invites visitors on a geological journey of discovery through southern Hesse since March 27, 2026. The exhibition runs until February 7, 2027.
A look into the region's past
The exhibition shows how the landscape of southern Hesse has developed over more than 560 million years. The focus is on rocks, fossils, and minerals from a radius of approximately 30 kilometers around the Messel Pit.
Visitors gain insights into a time when volcanoes were active, mountains were formed, and even dinosaurs roamed the region.
Research and rare finds in focus
The exhibition also presents new scientific findings, including those from collaborations with the Technical University of Darmstadt and other research institutions.
A particular highlight is a gneiss from Auerbach, which, at around 560 million years old, is considered the oldest rock in the Odenwald.
In addition, fossils from the region will be on display, some of which have rarely been seen by the public before. These include finds from the area surrounding the Prince of Hesse mine.

Interactive stations and artistic perspectives
In addition to classic exhibits, the exhibition offers interactive elements. A 3D model illustrates the formation of the Messel Pit, while other stations show the development of the climate throughout Earth's history.
Outdoors, an artistic installation complements the exhibition concept and offers a creative approach to Earth's history.

Supporting program and special offers
Guided tours and events are planned to accompany the exhibition. In addition, there will be a craft beer from Messel specially brewed for the exhibition.
Another highlight is the mine festival on August 2, 2026, where visitors can have their own rocks and fossils identified.

The exhibition can be seen in the museum at the UNESCO World Heritage Site Messel Pit, Roßdörfer Straße 108.
