Gina Pietsch and Fabio Costa honor Mikis Theodorakis at the Theater im Pädagog
To mark the 100th anniversary of Mikis Theodorakis's birth , singer and actress Gina Pietsch and pianist Fabio Costa a musical evening about the life, art and political work of the legendary Greek composer on November 30, 2025 at the Theater im Pädagog Darmstadt
Theodorakis was far more than a musician: he was a resistance fighter, a politician, and a symbol of a free Greece. His songs, often settings of works by great Greek poets, remain deeply rooted in the collective memory and are part of his country's cultural heritage.
With their program, Gina Pietsch and Fabio Costa create a musical and narrative arc spanning Theodorakis's life from his childhood through the German occupation, the civil war, and his years as a prisoner of war, to his political activism in later decades. His most famous works will be performed alongside rarely heard pieces, accompanied by reflections on freedom, humanity, and artistic responsibility.
Theodorakis remained a critical voice in Europe well into old age. As recently as 2011, he appealed to the citizens of the continent to stand up against the "totalitarianism of the markets" and to create a democratic, peaceful Europe – a message that has lost none of its relevance in times of global crises.
