The replacement building with a barrier-free ramp is scheduled for completion in 2026.
The pedestrian bridge over the Modau River , an extension of Alte Sackgasse in Darmstadt-Eberstadt, will be closed from Saturday, November 15, 2025 , for traffic safety reasons . A detour via Odenwaldstraße and Eberstädter Kirchstraße will be signposted.
"The latest structural inspection revealed significant rot damage to the longitudinal beams," explains transport commissioner Paul Georg Wandrey . "A replacement structure will create a safe and barrier-free connection across the Modau in the area of the old dead end."
New building replaces old wooden structure from 1987
An inspection of the wooden bridge , revealed a significant deterioration in its condition, achieved through drilling resistance and wood moisture measurements . The engineering firm commissioned to assess the situation recommended closing the bridge at the start of the wet and cold season. Renovation was ruled out due to the high costs and limited lifespan of the structure.
The Mobility and Civil Engineering Office has already begun planning the replacement structure. The new bridge will a steel construction , with the existing staircase being replaced accessible ramp
Construction period planned until summer 2026
The demolition of the old bridge is still scheduled for 2025, and the new bridge summer 2026 , subject to budgetary approval . "The citizens of Eberstadt have already had to endure several bridge projects over the Modau River in recent years. But everyone's safety takes priority," Wandrey emphasizes.
