Modernization nearing completion – outdoor swimming pool offers new usage possibilities
The Mühltalbad swimming pool in the Eberstadt district of Darmstadt is nearing its reopening. According to the City of Darmstadt, the extensive renovations are scheduled to be completed by the beginning of June. The pool is planned to reopen to the public on June 4, 2026.
Construction work in its final phase
Work is still underway, particularly on the grounds. However, the technical modernization of the facility is largely complete.
Mayor Hanno Benz explains that, among other things, the supply infrastructure has been renewed to ensure energy-efficient operation. The new technical building in the entrance area will handle the central control of the facility in the future.
New pool structure and increased safety
The pool facilities have also been extensively modernized. The large swimming pool will now offer flexible use with five 25-meter and five 50-meter lanes.
The non-swimmer pool has been physically separated, and the new slides also have their own landing pool. This reorganization is intended to increase safety and make the facility easier to navigate.
An adapted safety concept includes a security service in addition to water supervision.
Leisure activities will be expanded
In addition to the water areas, the modernized swimming pool offers additional recreational opportunities. Plans include sand play areas and courts for beach volleyball and handball. The existing playground will remain.
Quiet sunbathing areas are available for those seeking relaxation. A tenant is currently being sought for the kiosk.
Transitional solutions for the start
The entrance area will not be fully completed at the time of reopening. Temporary container solutions will be used for changing rooms and sanitary facilities, ensuring that swimming will remain fully operational.
Final technical tests are scheduled to take place by mid-May, including filling the pools and checking the water quality.
Importance for the city
Mayor Benz described the reopening as an important signal for the city. With this modernization, the city is making a long-term investment in sports and leisure facilities as well as in social cohesion.
Despite the extensive construction work, admission prices are expected to remain stable.
