Trade unions and history workshop demand a central memorial site for persecution and resistance
The working group "Actively Against the Right" of the ver.di district of South Hesse, together with the Darmstadt History Workshop and the Darmstadt branch of the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB), has submitted a proposal to the city council: A central museum or memorial to the Nazi era be established in Darmstadt. The focus should be on local history – that is, on the events, crimes, forms of persecution and resistance in Darmstadt and its present-day districts during the Nazi period.
“There are many individual memorial sites throughout the city, but a central point of contact with a comprehensive overview is still lacking,” the letter to the city council states. The initiators envision a place that not only presents historical exhibits but also facilitates current educational activities.
“This shouldn’t be a purely museum-like place, but a vibrant space,” emphasizes Karin Harder, Managing Director of the ver.di district of South Hesse. A concept is proposed that also incorporates work from school classes and university students . The planned facility aims to make the lives, persecution, experiences, and resistance of people in Darmstadt during the Nazi era authentically and interactively accessible .
The participating organizations are asking the city council of Darmstadt to support the project and submit a corresponding application to the city assembly.
