Lugend and fake news threaten environmental and climate protection
Populistic currents endanger nature and environmental protection- the nature conservation association Germany (NABU) warns in a current statement. As the association emphasizes, populist narratives often contradict scientific knowledge and thus make it more difficult to protect the climate and biodiversity.
Populism undermines scientific foundations
For the NABU, scientific subject work is the basis of its nature conservation work. The association relies on fact -based solutions to preserve biodiversity, protect ecosystems and counteract the climate crisis. But it is precisely these scientific knowledge that populists are often denied, distorted or discredited by targeted misinformation ("fake news").
As the NABU explains, these attacks go beyond mere criticism: they aim to make unpleasant scientific facts unbelievable and to undermine democratic decision -making processes. It is particularly questionable that populists even question the financing of independent facts in order to enforce their own version of reality.
Why populism is a threat to nature conservation
Populism relies on simple answers for complex problems. Populistic groups often claim to represent the "true will of the people" alone, while they devalue political and scientific institutions as "withdrawn" or "elitist". An enemy is often created - be it the science, minorities or organizations of civil society like NABU itself.
This attitude is particularly problematic in environmental policy: the climate crisis, the loss of species and the need for sustainable transformations are highly complex challenges, for which there are no simple solutions. Anyone who follows striking slogans runs the risk of having necessary measures or even preventing them.
No simple solutions for complex problems
“The natural and climate crisis cannot be combated with supposedly simple solutions. The way back to an idealized past is not an option - we need future -oriented, democratic and science -based strategies, ”emphasizes NABU in its statement.
The organization points out that populist groups often fuel fears to block the necessary social change. Instead of developing solutions based on scientific knowledge, they would defame nature conservation as "ideologically" or "hostile to the economy".
Win majorities for nature and climate protection
The NABU emphasizes that democracy and nature conservation are inextricably linked. In order to counter the challenges of the future, social majorities are necessary that develop sustainable solutions on the basis of a scientific basis. This includes convincing "dissenters" and leading a fact -based dialogue.
