20 trained volunteers support people in need of care in their daily lives – nursing activities are not part of the service
The VdK Pfungstadt is launching a neighborhood support program in Pfungstadt under the title "From Person to Person" . A team of 20 trained volunteers is ready to support people in need of care in their home environment and provide them with companionship.
Neighborhood assistance explicitly excludes nursing care. Instead, it includes activities such as reading and playing board games together, accompanying people to doctor's appointments or on walks, and helping with minor household chores.
The contact person for people from Pfungstadt who would like to use the offer is Hans-Jürgen Wittig, chairman of the VdK local association Pfungstadt and organizer of the project.
Neighborhood support in Pfungstadt aims to make everyday life easier
According to the VdK, people in need of care can finance the costs of support via the monthly relief allowance from their long-term care insurance.
The VdK points out that around six million people nationwide are considered to be in need of care, and 86 percent of them are cared for at home. In Hesse, this figure is around 370,000. Small forms of assistance in everyday life can relieve the burden on both those requiring care and their relatives.
The Pfungstadt offer is supported by the statewide project “Digital Networking and Professionalization of Neighborhood Assistance”, launched in 2026 by the State Association of Neighborhood Assistance in Hesse eV. Volunteers are to receive, among other things, digital tools for administrative and organizational tasks as well as further training opportunities.
In the long term, a statewide network for the exchange of knowledge and experience is also planned. According to the VdK (Social Association of Germany), the project will be scientifically monitored and evaluated by the Institute for Economics, Labor and Culture. Funding is provided by the Hessian Ministry for Family, Seniors, Sport, Health and Care.
“We are very pleased to be able to participate in this project,” says Wittig. This makes the start in Pfungstadt easier, as those involved can draw on professional support and the experience of other volunteers.
Financial support for the establishment of the “VdK Neighborhood Help Pfungstadt” also came from the Helene Gröninger Citizens' Foundation.
